TRUST Looking at their portfolio would help a great deal but sometimes word of mouth is a good lead to go by. You can’t go wrong with recommendations from a trusted friend or family member – especially if they have a nice home or two themselves. However, an interior designer with a versatile portfolio is a good thing: more than likely, your expectations won’t surpass his skills.
SIGNATURE STYLE Every good designer who takes pride in his or her work will have a signature style. Having a strong sense of their own style also shows how passionate designers are about their work. Checking out a designer’s home should be able to give you an idea of his or her aesthetics; what else would designers put their heart and soul into if not their own personal sanctuary?
BUDGET Assuming you’re prudent enough to come up with a budget, make sure the designer that you’re keen on engaging is able to meet your budget. At the point of discussion, be sure to get off on a good start by being honest about your budget – honest first: with yourself, and of course your designer. Don’t hesitate when it comes to asking your designer about how he or she charges.
GOOD COMMUNICATION Just like in any kind of relationship, it’s important that you and the interior designer you’re keen on snagging have good camaraderie; a good rapport at least is important. A good designer should know to ask you relevant questions like what type of designs and artwork you like; they show a keen interest in your present home.
PRESENTATION Professionalism does show in how prepared someone is. Listen to the questions the designers ask: is he or she mentioning floor plans, detailed drawings and floor elevation? These topics of discussion are telling signs of the designer’s organisation skills and being organised is a common trait among every successful person.
EXPECTATIONS Your expectations are prime but so is your interior designer’s in that he or she has a vision too. Be sure that both of you are able to meet each other’s expectations.
NETWORK How far does the interior designer’s network extend? Interior designers have their own clique of contractors and subcontractors that they regularly collaborate with. Having your interior designer provide you with good contractors will also be easier on your pocket.
