Dressed up in a surprisingly harmonious combination of an urban house and a countryside cabin, this home is the perfect place to return to and unwind after a long day.
Capitalising on the rather sleepy nature of the town of Saujana Permai, Avanti Residences is an oasis of tranquillity a comfortable distance away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Its serene atmosphere is largely due to its low density and significant amount of greenery which includes each house’s reasonably-sized garden. Inspired by this, one homeowner here wanted their house to have a rustic feel to it but still remain true to its relatively urban setting. Alex Lim and Siti Kafsyah binti Abdul Samat obliged by turning the abode into a modern country home that achieved a fine balance of both styles.
Working off the residence’s base architecture which is designed to “invite the outside in”, the interior has been crafted in such a way that it seemingly brings the outdoor landscape inside even more. This is most clearly seen in the abundant use of wood elements in each part of the house in a mixture of expected and unexpected ways such as wood-framed mirrors in the bathrooms. The two spaces which best exemplify this are the living and dining areas which perfectly capture the desired aesthetic.
In the living area, synthetic wooden beams were installed in the ceiling in such a way that they brought to mind old-fashioned Western country cabins. Meanwhile, the rest of the space itself has a very modern feel to it from its plush sofas to its multi-coloured footstools. Adding a slight European-inspired functionality are pieces like the white chest of drawers and the gilded coffee table. When not covered by the full-length curtains, the glass doors allow for the lush greenery in the garden to be appreciated from the comfort of the sofa.
Synthetic wooden beams also decorate the stretch of ceiling in the dining area which emphasises the country home aspect of the overall design in a more pronounced but still subtle way. Illuminated by an old-fashioned chandelier, the wooden-topped dining table has been paired with a seemingly random combination of a light grey diamond-tufted armchair, light grey fabric upholstered dining chairs and a wooden bench. Just as with the living area, the glass doors nearby provide a view of the garden outside.
Offering its own interpretation of a modern country home, the main kitchen has substituted synthetic wooden beams for natural wood planks. Combined with the hardwood flooring used here, these wood elements frame the white kitchen cabinets, kitchen island and quartz countertops to create a clean yet warm atmosphere. In contrast, the smaller kitchen and bar near the dining area incorporates its wood elements into its cabinet shelves and kitchen peninsula. A set of dark wooden barstools help complete the look and make it ideal for casual evening drinks.
Considering the dedication to the chosen theme, it is unsurprising to find that every room upstairs features wood elements in addition to the hardwood flooring. The lounge features synthetic wooden beams on its stretch of ceiling while each bedroom has its own unique way of incorporating the material. A notable exception is the master bedroom which has a feature wall behind the bed that is made up of irregular brown marble pieces. To balance this out, a significant portion of the balcony also features hardwood flooring and has a small bench made entirely out of wood in an alcove where the residents can relax and admire the outdoor scenery.
