Set out to refurbish this double-storey semi-detached home, the designer has toed a fine line between character-rich aesthetic and modern-day comfortability to produce a living space that captures a sense of nostalgia through exceptional furniture choices and design details. Instead of working against the residence’s existing building structure, modern window fixtures were fitted strategically into to provide the interior with natural illumination. Other than creating a warm and homely vibe, the natural ventilation also helps to maintain comfortable room temperature while establishing an energy-saving home design just like the house of old.
In order to enhance the characteristics of its design, the existing doors and grills were refinished with fresh coatings and incorporated as part of its decorative features. As such, the living room is filled with wood-based furniture, leather sofas, black-matted steel frames and exposed pipes to forge a sense of visual connectivity. Aside from that, the floor is mainly finished with mosaic tiles, which were a family-favourite back in the olden days. Complementing that with a vast selection of potted plants the common areas of this house instinctively resonate a nostalgic vibe of old Malaysian homes.
While the design of this residence blurred the line between exterior and interior spaces, the designer has also paid plenty of attention into the landscaping, which features a semi-open garden terrace equipped with a timber deck, a snug outdoor bench and a glass roof, enabling the owners to enjoy the beauty of nature in the comforts of a sheltered space. In general, the designer has harmonised nature and human-centric elements to produce a perfectly comfortable living space that reminds us the joy of living in a less complicated world.
