Standing out from the crowd with its raw look and unconventional layout, this boutique guesthouse offers a relaxing stay in one distinctively designed package.
Conveniently located a short drive away from some of Johor Bahru’s most famous tourist attractions, it is no wonder that Desa Tebrau is a perfect place to spend the night for out-of-towners. Seeking to capitalise on this fact and give its guests another memorable experience, De Gallery sought to become one of the trendiest boutique guesthouses in town. Ken Tiu Kim Chuan put his skills and expertise to work, brilliantly transforming the second floor of an unassuming shophouse into something that fulfilled this wish. The result of this ingenious revamp is a brand new space full of pleasant surprises that manages to make a chic statement while being artistically dominated by the rustic industrial concept.
Representing a bold new take on bed ‘n’ breakfast establishments, the guesthouse boasts a tastefully rugged look that is largely expressed through its materials and palette. Raw brick, copper and wood represent the prevalent elements of the premises which have been paired with complementary shades of grey. The feature wall in particular makes full use of its dark grey coating to give itself a unique texture that is sure to capture the attention of the guests. Accompanying these dark tones is warm ambient lighting that helps create a tranquil and soothing atmosphere that will facilitate their relaxation.
In order to maintain a sense of cohesiveness and flow in terms of the overall aesthetic, a hanging set of iron and wood cabinetry was installed in the space. Aside from creating an ambience of contemporary timelessness that had hints of rustic elegance, it also provides guests with invaluable privacy. Meanwhile, the standard dining space was eliminated in favour of a more flexible bar counter which allows the space to be used in a variety of ways according to the needs of the guests.
Pulling double duty is the unique barn door at the centre which partitions away a small guestroom and serves as a screen for the projector installed behind it. When not in use, it opens up to an inviting communal space. Last but not least, a sleek and tall metal door keeps things neat and streamlined as well as separates the master bedroom from the rest of the guesthouse.
