Iittala’s hands-on-approach with glasswork has garnered a strong following since its establishment in 1881, undoubtedly giving the Iittala story the upper hand when it comes to the finer things in life. With such a rich tradition to uphold, it only made sense for Oiva Toikka, one of the greatest names in Finnish design, to come into the picture. His iconic collection of Iittala Birds first took flight in 1993 and embodied a rich fusion of glassmaking traditions. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence, Iittala has created a little surprise in addition to the brand’s annual bird collection which will only have 2,017 units made for the occasion.
The Suomi 100 – also known as the Finland 100 Dove – has been a long time coming. As Finland is a country of vast green forests, beautiful Baltic islands and countless blue lakes, it was only apt that the pristine landscape should be captured in its centennial installation. Carrying an ultramarine blue, transparent body, these birds are also decorated with green, silver and blue-shaded lustre patterns, reminiscent of stones on the shore that are reflected by the blue sky and water in Finland.
