Michael Young Studio
Hong Kong-based Michael Young is a visionary and a pioneer at heart. Michael Young Studio operates several design services under one framework as the various areas of design encompassing spatial, furniture & lighting, industrial design and special editions. Michael has whipped up an impressive array of industrial design products with a wealth of international designers; producing a wide diversity of styles, textures and shapes. Not only has the designer-cum-Creative Director collaborated with Coalesse and Steelcase, he has recently received the iF Gold Award 2017 for the best LessThanFiveChair.
From his studio in Hong Kong, Michael cultivates a dissident approach to the contemporary notion of design, auditing unorthodox ideas in order to generate non-standard logics and provide alternative opportunities. His LessThanFiveChair Collection is one such project. One will notice the high spec finishing on carbon fibre and the huge range of colours, patterns and finished that carbon is an ideal canvas for (through the customising app); transformed into an innovative new material that is usually used for bicycles.
The designer continues to explore materials and surfaces, this time applying his experimental approach to a six seater dining table with similar design language: the 2-metre table has a clear glass top to show the lightweight, but super stable carbon fibre frame that are based on the intersection of different planes; emphasising the patterns and textures that are created with this unique material. To Michael, carbon fibre may be great for electric cars in the future, due to its weight saving properties.
