The hectic and complicated nature of life today has made many long for the simplicity of bygone days. As one of the many issues people currently face is limited living space due to having too much clutter, minimalism has become one of the fastest growing trends of this era. Homeowners want to be able to make the most out of every bit of space they have but there is no denying that the desire to live in a beautiful abode remains constant. Tasked with carrying out such a delicate balancing act for this condominium unit in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Jack Beh created a simple yet sophisticated interior that turns heads without trying.
A picture perfect example of the modern minimalist style that does so much with so little, this residence is impressively unassuming from start to finish. Its clean and crisp look can be largely attributed to the chosen palette of neutral colours that is predominantly monochrome save for some complementary wood elements. This impression is further accentuated by the smooth straight lines which define nearly all the furnishings in the home from the ceiling lights to the dining table.
Meanwhile, the sense of spaciousness that permeates the residence cannot solely be attributed to its square footage but also several ingenious design choices. One such technique was the strategic placement of silver and black mirrors at specific points which create the desired effect. There is also the Nero Marquina marble used in large key sections of the home such as the dining table and kitchen countertops which serve a dual purpose in this regard. Thanks to their extremely reflective surfaces, they essentially act as mirrors while their natural beauty makes the place look effortlessly classy.
As expected, the simplicity inherent in these social areas also defines the abode’s more private spaces, appearing in the form of light stone grey walls and black curtains. Instead of black marble, however, ash wood panels cover the back wall of the bedrooms, adding that welcome sense of warmth which is all but necessary when sleeping or just relaxing. For an added touch of flair, two high-gloss black stripes cut through the wood in different ways for the two bedrooms.
That is not to say that this simple design and layout does not disguise a few fascinating secrets as the seemingly unassuming monochrome living area provides artful cover for a hidden room next to it. A more obvious but no less delightful secret is the balcony which has been covered with artificial grass and furnished with a grey table and chair set, making it perfect for outdoor meals when the weather is agreeable.
