Founded by Finnish architect Markku Mattila and Professor Sudjit Sananwai from Thailand, the VERNADOC initiative has rapidly become widespread in many countries across the globe. The word “VERNADOC” refers to a methodology for vernacular architecture study emphasising on the collection of data and information on site through the use of documentation techniques to produce high-quality, measured drawings. As the world is at risk of losing its vernacular architecture – an architectural style that is designed based on local needs and reflects local traditions – VERNADOC is creating communities formed by volunteers and enthusiasts alike who will document a particular site or building using its methodology.
The results have often inspired building owners as well as the people living in the area, helping them realise the values of their property. This will ultimately play a role in convincing them to conserve these buildings. During the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival (KLAF 2017), VERNADOC Malaysia, supported by Suriwong, has showcased works from previous documentation efforts for the public to appreciate. Soong Khang Wei, the Marketing Director of Suriwong Marketing Sdn Bhd, also announced that it was a proud moment for the company to kick-off VERNADOC Malaysia after being in contact with the founders for seven years. The event was also attended by members of VERNADOC Thailand: Palai Sananwai, Nathatai Chansen, Pitchawut Virutamawongse and Watanyoo Shivapakwajjanalert.
