A tour visit with SP Setia at the S11 house that is located in an established older suburb of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. A site that was built in the early’s 1960s and had become dilapidated but Dr Tan Loke Mun planned a new green tropical house. It is the highest level of Platinum rating of Malaysia’s Green Building Index (GBI).
The house is equipped with lights shafts, wind turbines and PV. For instance, the wind turbine is specially designed with a steel framed glazed pyramid that provides the house with the “stack effect” where the warm air moves upward in a building. The sunlight is filtered and captured through the lightbox at the top of the roof and channelled down to the spaces below.
In addition, the house is also equipped with sustainable elements such as rainwater harvesting tanks, recycled steel staircase, use of energy saving T5 and LED lighting as well as vegetable, herb and fruit garden. The permaculture approach makes use of the existing natural resources that will help integrate a community.
On that note, the Green Building Index is Malaysia’s green rating tool for buildings and towns to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise awareness of environmental issues amongst Developers, Architects, Engineers, Planners, Designers, Contractors and Public, to look forward to a brighter and greener future for the generation to come.
